The Benefits of Giving
It has been widely reported in the UK press that among the credit crunch’s first victims have been charities, both local and national. No one can afford to give to charity any more. The Buddhist view of generosity is rather different. Buddhism suggests that if we give freely, with a good heart, and without expecting any kind of pay-back, then the benefits of whatever we give will be multiplied 100,000-fold, not only for those who benefit from our generosity but also in generating our own personal happiness.
Practising generosity is beneficial to both the recipient and the giver. The law of cause and effect teaches us that positive karma accumulated through giving will definitely result in future fortune and merit. The teachings on compassion also explain that the only way to find happiness is by helping others. These beliefs form the basis of Mahayana Buddhism and therefore are essential in the Tibetan tradition.
How Dzogchen Monastery Helps Others
Dzogchen Monastery’s Community Aid programme, directed by the Kalsang Foundation, aims to provide free medical and educational facilities for the whole district. This includes the population of Dzogchen village and a large number of nomad families, as well as hundreds of poor monks and nuns. The total number of people in receipt of direct aid from Dzogchen Monastery is over 15,000. In addition to this, the reconstruction of Dzogchen Monastery, Shira Sing Buddhist University and Pema Tung Retreat Centre is still not complete. There are still several major historical buildings which need to be rebuilt, as well as the new infrastructure project, which, in order to accommodate the increasing numbers of monastics and lay people coming to Pema Tung for retreat and to receive teachings and empowerments, aims to build a complete underground pipe network to supply piped water and drainage to Pema Tung. The monastery and all its activities depend entirely on donations.

Prayer Services
It is part of the monastic ritual in Dzogchen Monastery for the monks and nuns to assemble daily in the temple to hold prayer services, requested by lay people in need of help for themselves, their families or friends. In these difficult times, it is important that Westerners can also access the amazing help and spiritual support the Dzogchen spiritual community offers.
