Mahasandhi Buddhist Group was established in the UK in January 2006, on the instructions of Kyabje Dzogchen Pema Kalsang Rinpoche and his nephew, Dza Mura Rinpoche. Since then we’ve been meeting regularly for the study and practice of authentic Tibetan Buddhism and, as most of our members currently have no opportunity to visit Dzogchen, we’ve been fortunate enough to be enabled to take Refuge vows and also receive teachings and empowerments from these two great Lamas via an internet link with webcam. As Kyabje Rinpoche told us “Although we might be separated by great distances, we are together in our hearts.”
Of course, over the last 20 years or so, elements of Buddhism have become increasingly familiar in the west; for example, yoga exercises (separated from their spiritual context), meditation and visualisation as a pleasant way of relaxing and, more recently, the practice of mindfulness used for its effectiveness in combating anxiety and depression. Countless westerners are enjoying health and happiness through benefits derived from Buddhism, maybe without realising that Buddhism has even more to offer them.
Mahasandhi Buddhist group looks at things a little bit differently. For the last 5 years, we’ve been dedicated to embracing traditional Tibetan Buddhist teachings in their entirety – even the more challenging elements! Though the pick-and-mix approach to Buddhism may work well for a while, with sincere, regular practice gradual but more profound and lasting changes can occur: the mind becomes clearer and lucid, strong emotions loose their power, and the blessings of bodhicitta (wisdom, love and compassion for all beings) grow in our hearts. By following this path, Mahasandhi Buddhist group members aspire to the true aim of Tibetan Buddhist practice, which is to gain enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings, although we’re well aware we have a very long way to go.
